About this course

The technology of reinforcing a brittle material with fibrous material was already used more than 1000 years ago.  During the 1950s, people tried the idea of dosing a steel reinforcement directly into a concrete mixer, as an alternative to placing steel bars. Steel reinforcement was cut down into smaller pieces to fit in the mixer and this eventually developed into steel fibers.

There are many benefits of using fibers in concrete.  They can be for structural or non-structural purposes. In part 1 of 2 of this course, we will identify  which types of concrete fibers can be used and some of the benefits of using fiber-reinforced concrete.
